| Up until 395 AD, the Western empire was just holding together. After the seperation of the East and West Roman empires, the West slowly fell into a state of dispair. In about 395 AD, emperors of the Western Roman Empire became figureheads. The real leaders were behind the scenes, and were usually strong military leaders. What has been considered the official fall of the Western Roman Emire occured when unsatisfied mercenaries, led by Odoacer revolted and disposed of Romulus Augustus.
Following this event were several wars between the Eastern Roman Empire, and what used to be the Barbarian tribes in Rom. These battles were mainly over land, ending when the Ostrogoths, an Eastern Germanic tribe conquered Italy.
This new empire was said to be Roman by the people, but became less and less Romanized over the years. This empire though, kept the Roman style alive for many more years before it's fall.
